Five reasons why your church needs a blog

While it’s likely your church has a website, does it have a blog? Perhaps you can’t see a good reason to have one, or maybe you’re not sure where to start.

Or perhaps you feel overwhelmed with the amount of content already out there among the world’s 600 million existing blogs

Well, it’s not too late to start one.

Let’s look at five reasons why having a blog on your church’s website can be a great way to share your message, build community, and reach a wider audience.

1. Help boost your search engine results

Blogs are an essential part of any SEO strategy because they allow you to create content that helps people find you when they're searching online.

For example, if someone searches with the key words "Churches in xxxx town/city," they'll probably see blog posts from local churches as some of their top results on Google.

Even better if they see your church, right?

And then, hopefully, that will encourage them to come to your church to see it for themselves.

2. Drive traffic to your website or landing page

By writing about topics that are relevant to your audiences (churchgoers or just those who are curious), you can drive traffic to your website or a specific landing page.

For example, if you’re wanting to promote an event (such as an Easter or Christmas service), you can write a blog about the festival and link to your event in the blog.

And it doesn’t end with writing and publishing a blog. You can use each blog as a source for multiple pieces of social media content that can link back to your website.

3. Show people what your church is all about

Blogs are an excellent way to show people what you stand for and what your viewpoints are.

Whether it’s tough questions, biblical reflections, or people profiles, this is a great way to give people a sense of who you are as a church.

A blog can also be used to share your church's story, mission, and values, which increases authenticity, transparency, and trust for new members and visitors.

4. Connect with new and existing communities

If you’re wanting to form or grow a church community, then good communication is essential.

A blog means you can share information about upcoming events, volunteering opportunities,  and other important information that will help people connect with your ministry.

A pro tip: don’t tell people at the outset that you’ll be posting every week (or at a similar frequency) if you don’t have the capacity and resources to fulfil this promise.

Set healthy expectations and carefully consider why you’re writing a blog in the first place.

5. Respond to news and current events to show relevancy and compassion

By providing commentary on current events and news, you can show how biblical truths and the church’s perspective connect with real world issues.

If your church is able to write a rapid response to a major event or new issue in the news, it helps to show that you are a relevant community that cares about what’s going on in the world.
